Average global temperature has increased by almost 1º F over the past century.  Scientists expect the average global temperature to increase an additional 2 to 6º F over the next one hundred years.

CWCB Addresses Climate Change

The CWCB is helping water managers by supporting planning efforts on a local, regional and statewide basis. Below are a few of the things CWCB is participating in…

  • The Colorado River Water Availability Study is intended to help Colorado make wise resource management decisions while acknowledging that there is a degree of uncertainty as Colorado moves into the future. The study aims to answer the question: "How much water from the Colorado River Basin System is available to meet Colorado's current and future water needs?"
  • The Joint Front Range Climate Change Vulnerability Study (JFRCCVS) involves metropolitan water providers along Colorado’s Front Range who are concerned about the possible impacts these changes may have on their future available water supply.  This study intends to provide the education, tools, and methodology necessary to examine the possible effects of climate change on several common watersheds.
  • The Office of Water Conservation and Drought Planning promotes drought planning by encouraging and assisting communities to prepare and implement drought mitigation plans and by monitoring drought impacts and informing the public, media, and state officials. Better preparedness will help Colorado communities adapt in the face of a changing climate.
While more and more local communities are realizing the importance of comprehensive drought planning, the State is also doing its part to ensure preparedness for future droughts. State drought planning has been developed through the preparation and implementation of the Colorado Drought Mitigation and Response Plan

In addition to planning for possible changes to water resources and drought, the State of Colorado has also formulated a strategy to address global warming. The Colorado Climate Action Plan sets specific, but achievable goals for Coloradans.
